Counseling for First Responders & LGBTQIA+ Clients in Florida

Being the one everyone else relies on can come at a cost. Whether you’re a firefighter, paramedic, police officer, dispatcher, nurse, or part of the LGBTQIA+ community, you may be used to pushing through and minimizing your own pain.

Therapy offers a confidential, non-judgmental place to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the parts of you that have been on the back burner for too long

  • Culturally informed care for first responders

I understand the rhythms of shift work, station culture, and the impact of chronic exposure to crisis. You don’t have to translate your world to me.

  • Affirming care for LGBTQIA+ clients

Your identity, relationships, and experiences are respected and affirmed here. This is a space where you don’t have to justify who you are..

  • Grounded, practical support

We’ll work together to build coping skills, reconnect with your values, and create a life that feels more aligned, not just “less bad.”

  • Joel Neild, MA, RMHCI, CPT, NCC, FP-C

I’m a pre-licensure mental health counselor specializing in working with first responders, LGBTQIA+ clients, and college students/young adults. Before becoming a counselor, I spent over 30 years as a firefighter-paramedic, working in high-intensity environments where people’s worst days were “just another call” for the crew.

I know what it’s like to compartmentalize, to joke through pain, and to keep going even when you’re running on fumes. I also know that at some point, that strategy stops working.

    How I Work

My approach is collaborative, direct, and compassionate. I draw from:

    • Gestalt therapy – focusing on what you’re feeling and experiencing in the present moment

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – helping you move toward a values-driven life, even when pain is present

    • DBT-informed strategies – building skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and healthier relationships

You won’t get a cold, clinical experience with me. You’ll get a real person who respects your lived experience, your culture, and your resilience. We’ll work at your pace, with space for both heavy and lighter moments.

    My Values as a Counselor

    • Respect: You are the expert on your life; I bring tools, not verdicts.

    • Cultural humility: I continually learn about the communities I serve, rather than assuming I “know.”

    • Inclusivity: All identities, bodies, relationships, and backgrounds are welcome here.

    • Practicality: Insight is important—but so are strategies you can actually use between sessions.

If you’re used to being the helper, it can feel strange to ask for help. Therapy can be the one place where you don’t have to be “on” and don’t have to take care of anyone else.

FAQs

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. I offer secure telehealth sessions for clients located anywhere in Florida.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

What if I’m a coworker or know you professionally?

Boundaries are especially important in small or close-knit communities like first responders. If we’ve worked together or know each other through the community, we’ll talk through whether counseling with me is appropriate and ethical. If not, I’ll help connect you with another trusted therapist.

How often would we meet?

Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and safety. Over time, we may move to every other week, depending on your needs and goals

How long will I be in therapy?

It depends on what you’re working on. Some people come in with a focused goal for a few months; others prefer longer-term support. We’ll regularly check in about how therapy is going and adjust as needed.

Is what I share confidential?

In most cases, yes. What you discuss in therapy stays between us. There are some legal and ethical exceptions, such as if there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of abuse involving vulnerable individuals. I’ll review confidentiality in detail during our first session.
